Dhaka, Bangladesh: New Delhi is ready to engage with the newly elected government in Bangladesh. India will be represented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri at the swearing-in ceremony of Tarique Rahman on February 17, 2026. This high-level delegation signals India’s intent to rebuild bilateral ties after a period of significant political transition in the neighboring nation.
The official invitation reached Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday evening. However, the Prime Minister cannot attend due to a pre-scheduled bilateral summit with French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai. Despite his absence, the decision to send the Speaker of the lower house reflects the importance India places on its relationship with Dhaka.
Tarique Rahman and BNP Secure Landslide Victory
The upcoming ceremony follows the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) securing a massive mandate in the 13th parliamentary elections. This election was the first since the mass protests of 2024 led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina. The BNP achieved a commanding two-thirds majority, winning over 200 seats in the 300-member parliament.
Tarique Rahman, who returned to Bangladesh in late 2025 after 17 years in exile, is set to lead the nation. The swearing-in will take place at the National Parliament’s South Plaza. This venue choice departs from the traditional ceremony held at the presidential palace. Authorities expect a massive gathering, including leaders from 13 countries such as China, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.
India Reaffirms Support for a Democratic Bangladesh
New Delhi’s diplomatic response has been swift and proactive. On February 13, Prime Minister Modi became the first foreign leader to speak directly with Rahman following the election results. During the call, Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to a “democratic, progressive, and inclusive” Bangladesh.
Moreover, the Tarique Rahman swearing-in ceremony serves as a vital platform for regional diplomacy. BNP foreign policy adviser Humayun Kabir described the outreach to India as a “goodwill gesture.” He noted that the new administration intends to prioritize stability and mutual respect.
Rahman has already outlined his immediate priorities. These include restoring law and order, stabilizing the economy, and fostering national unity. Furthermore, the presence of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri alongside Om Birla suggests that substantive diplomatic discussions may occur on the sidelines of the event.
