Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami Launches ‘She for STEM’ Programme, Awards Scholarships to Girls

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami promotes women in STEM, awards Rs 50,000 scholarships to talented girls, and encourages STEM startups under ‘She for STEM’ initiative

Uttarakhand : Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami participated in the ‘She for STEM Uttarakhand’ workshop at Uttarakhand Technical University, Sudhowala, Dehradun on Wednesday, commemorating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

During the event, Pushkar Dhami greeted the dignitaries and attendees and presented scholarships of Rs 50,000 each to 20 talented girls under the ‘She for STEM’ programme. He announced that five girls from each district will receive scholarships and that financial support will be extended to help girls establish STEM-based startups. Additionally, self-help groups will be connected with Women Technology Centres to promote innovation.

The Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami expressed that the initiative inspires girls to pursue education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). He emphasized efforts to expand access to modern technology and scientific knowledge in remote and border areas, empowering women across the state.

CM Pushkar Dhami Appreciates Organisers for Success of ‘She for STEM’ Programme

Pushkar Dhami congratulated the organisers, including InMobi, Vigyanshala International, UCOST, and Uttarakhand Technical University, for their contribution to the programme’s success.

Highlighting historical contributions, he noted that Indian women have played significant roles in science, philosophy, astronomy, and medicine. During the Vedic period, scholars such as Gargi and Maitreyi led philosophical discussions, Lilavati contributed to mathematics, and women contributed to Ayurvedic texts like Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita.

He also cited modern examples of Indian women achievers in science and technology, including:

  • Anna Mani, India’s first woman meteorologist, known as the ‘Weather Woman of India’.
  • Kamala Sohonie, the first Indian woman to earn a PhD in science.
  • Dr Tessy Thomas, the ‘Missile Woman of India’, who led projects like Agni-4 and Agni-5.
  • Dr Ritu Karidhal, the ‘Rocket Woman’, instrumental in missions like Mangalyaan.

Pushkar Dhami emphasized that women’s success benefits both individuals and the nation. He highlighted that 42–43% of STEM graduates in India are women, a higher proportion than in many developed countries, showing the growing impact of Indian women in these fields.

He stressed the importance of providing women with opportunities, resources, and confidence to achieve their goals and contribute to India’s development.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, Pushkar Dhami noted that the nation’s progress in the 21st century depends on science and technological innovation, citing achievements like COVID vaccines, Chandrayaan-3, Aditya L1, and the Gaganyaan mission. Under the Digital India campaign, technologies such as AI, Machine Learning, and Cloud Computing are being promoted, positioning India as a global leader in technological advancement.
