Delhi records 9,211 respiratory deaths in 2024, total deaths rise to 1,39,480, while infant mortality drops slightly, says official data.

According to the most recent official data given by the Delhi government, the national capital saw 9,211 deaths from respiratory disorders in 2024, up from 8,801 in 2023, continuing an increased trend observed over the previous few years.

Asthma, pneumonia, lung cancer, and tuberculosis are common respiratory disorders that can cause breathing problems.

Infectious and parasitic disorders were shown to be the next leading causes of death in 2024, after circulating diseases. The national capital’s total death rate likewise increased.

In Delhi, there were 1,39,480 deaths overall in 2024, up from 1,32,391 the year before. Of these, 38 were categorized as other genders, 54,051 as females, and 85,391 as males. 90,883 of these deaths have medical certification.

The infant mortality rate (IMR) in the nation’s capital has somewhat decreased from 23.61 in 2023 to 22.4 per 1000 live births. IMR is a measure of infant mortality under a year of age.

The most recent data shows that circulatory disease—which includes heart failure, stroke, and clogged arteries—was the cause of 21,262 deaths. This figure was 15,714 in 2023.

At 16,060, infectious and parasitic diseases were the second most common cause of mortality in the nation’s capital. These diseases typically spread through contaminated food and water and are caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The number of deaths of this kind decreased from 20,781 the year before.

According to the documents, the city registered 3,06,459 live births in 2024, which was 8,628 fewer than the year before.

According to the data, the birth rate decreased from 14.66 in 2023 to 14 in 2024, while the mortality rate rose from 6.16 in 2023 to 6.37 in 2024. The number of births and deaths per 1,000 people in a location is measured.

By 2036, it is anticipated that Delhi’s population will have grown to 2.65 crore over the previous ten years. Statistics show that 99.1% of children under five have a birth certificate.
