Live updates on the unrest in Bangladesh: Following the killing of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, Bangladesh has been engulfed in violent protests since late Thursday, raising fears of more upheaval before the country’s national elections.

As he began his election campaign in Dhaka last Friday, masked attackers shot Hadi in the head. Hadi was a student leader during the rebellion that toppled the Sheikh Hasina government last year. After receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, he was transferred to Singapore, where he passed away six days after being kept on life support.

Social media users shared videos of rioters in Dhaka damaging the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, two of the nation’s major media outlets, late Thursday. The Daily Star headquarters was targeted once more on Friday. The Friday issue of both media outlets was put on hold.

Hadi’s name was mentioned in emotionally charged slogans during the protests. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, extra security personnel were sent in to stop more violence in a number of regions that remained heated late Thursday night.

Muhammad Yunus, the temporary leader of Bangladesh, responded to Hadi’s dying by saying, “His passing represents an irreplaceable loss to the nation’s political and democratic sphere.” Yunus advised people to maintain their composure and made sure that Hadi’s death was investigated transparently.
