DDA and NSD launch ‘Rangbagh’ to turn parks into creative hubs with theatre activities, starting at Bansera Park near Sarai Kale Khan ISBT.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is preparing to introduce a new cultural initiative called “Rangbagh” in partnership with the National School of Drama (NSD) in order to enhance the vibrancy and engagement of Delhi’s parks. By incorporating experiential learning activities and theater-based activities, the program endeavors to convert urban parks into vibrant community spaces.

NSD-trained instructors will facilitate theatre and experiential learning activities for the public, such as improvisation exercises, storytelling sessions, and acting and dance seminars, as part of the initiative. The NSD and the DDA will shortly sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to initiate this public program.

The project’s pilot phase will commence at Baansera Park, which is situated across from Sarai Kale Khan ISBT. It will consist of weekly seminars and a three-month certificate course. The successful implementation of the concept in additional parks throughout the city is expected to enhance community sentiment through the use of art and performance, according to officials.

Participants of all ages, including the elderly, will be warmly welcomed. The “Rangbag” program was developed in response to a directive from Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to revitalize these verdant spaces and enhance their appeal.

The initiative, according to officials, aims to transport theater “beyond formal institutions” and into natural, open spaces where individuals, particularly children and youth, can learn through play and imagination. They also mentioned that numerous floodplain parks have already been equipped with new amenities, including musical fountains, sculptures, seasonal plantations, and improved illumination, in order to enhance their appeal.

Officials anticipate that the forthcoming seminars will generate substantial public engagement, given the anticipated increase in foot traffic in urban parks as winter approaches.
