Senior Haryana IPS Officer Found Dead in Chandigarh Residence
CHANDIGARH : Haryana Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y. Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found dead at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on Tuesday afternoon. Preliminary reports suggest that the senior officer allegedly shot himself with his service revolver.
According to Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur, information about the incident was received around 1:30 pm from House No. 116, Sector 11. “The deceased has been identified as Puran Kumar, IPS (2001 batch), Haryana cadre. The CFSL team is at the spot, and an investigation is underway,” SSP Kaur said in an official statement.
Kumar’s body was reportedly discovered by his daughter in the basement of their residence. His wife, Amneet P. Kumar, a senior Haryana IAS officer, was not at home at the time of the incident. She is currently in Japan, part of an official delegation led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and is expected to return to Chandigarh on Wednesday morning.
Police Launch Investigation, Forensic Team Examines Spot
The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) team reached the spot shortly after the incident was reported and began collecting forensic evidence. Police officials sealed the residence for a detailed examination to determine the sequence of events leading to the officer’s death.
Sources confirmed that Kumar’s service revolver has been recovered from the scene. Investigators are awaiting the post-mortem report, which will be conducted at the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, to establish the exact cause of death.
Senior police officers from both Haryana and Chandigarh visited the site, expressing shock and grief over the loss of a respected officer known for his professionalism and calm demeanor.
