Lawyer Rakesh Kishore, 71, tried to throw a sneaker at CJI BR Gavai in court, but Gavai stayed calm and told officials to ignore the incident.

 New Delhi: The attack on Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai was denounced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ,who described it as a “reprehensible act” that infuriated all Indians. The Prime Minister also spoke with Gavai, expressing gratitude for the CJI’s “calm” following the incident in a post on X (previously Twitter).

“Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society,” PM Modi said. “It is utterly condemnable.”

“I appreciated the calm displayed by Justice Gavai in the face of such a situation,” he said, highlighting Gavai’s “commitment to values of justice and strengthening the spirit of our Constitution”.

A lawyer attempts to throw a sneaker at CJI.

Rakesh Kishore, a 71-year-old attorney, attempted to throw a sneaker at the Chief Justice earlier in the day in his Supreme Court courtroom. Gavai, however, asked the security guards and other officials there to disregard the incident and remained unaffected. “Avoid becoming sidetracked by this. We’re not preoccupied. After the event, Gavai informed officials inside the courthouse, “These things do not affect me.”

Police question Kishore

Kishore lives in Mayur Vihar in Delhi. He was arrested by the police after the event and subjected to a three-hour interrogation. He was later permitted to leave, though, and the police did not file a formal complaint. “India will not tolerate insults to Sanatan Dharma” was written in a note that the police had recovered from Kishore.

Additionally, we discovered that he was carrying a card from the Shahdara Bar Association and the Supreme Court Bar Association. The team questioned Kishore about the reason behind his actions, according to police sources cited by news agency PTI. “The advocate has claimed that he was unhappy with the CJI’s remarks during a recent hearing of a plea seeking the restoration of a Lord Vishnu idol in the Khajuraho Temple complex in Madhya Pradesh.”
