Post-Match Drama Erupts in Dubai
India’s thrilling five-wicket win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final in Dubai turned into an unprecedented controversy when the Indian team refused to accept the trophy from Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who also chairs the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
The presentation ceremony at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium descended into confusion after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed the ACC that the team would not take the trophy from Naqvi, citing his anti-India stance. Naqvi, who has frequently courted controversy with anti-India remarks and gestures, was left standing on the podium with officials as Indian players stayed back.
BCCI’s Clear Stand Against Naqvi
According to reports, the BCCI had already communicated its position through official channels. A senior board official revealed that the team was willing to receive the trophy from any other dignitary present, including Dubai Sports City chairman Khalid Al Zarooni. However, they categorically rejected the idea of accepting it from Naqvi.
The Indian team also maintained a “no handshake” policy with Pakistan players during the tournament. The refusal followed Naqvi’s earlier attempt to push the ICC to penalize India’s skipper Suryakumar Yadav for showing solidarity with the Indian Army after the Pahalgam terror attack.
As the standoff continued, post-match presenter Simon Doull announced that the Indian team would not collect the awards that evening. Soon after, Naqvi exited the venue along with ACC staff, taking the trophy and medals with him.
BCCI Demands Trophy and Medals Returned
The abrupt turn of events left fans and players shocked. Although the Indian squad celebrated on the field with family members and support staff, they posed for team photos without the trophy.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia expressed disappointment over the incident.
“We have decided not to take the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from the ACC chairman, who is also a key Pakistani minister. However, that does not mean he should take the trophy and medals away. We expect them to be returned at the earliest,” Saikia said.
The BCCI has announced plans to raise the issue formally at the next International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting scheduled in November in Dubai.
Pakistan’s Response and Political Undertones
Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha defended Naqvi’s actions, saying the ACC chairman was within his rights to present or withhold the trophy. However, critics argue that the minister’s political baggage overshadowed the sporting spirit of the occasion.
The controversy comes at a time when India-Pakistan cricket ties remain frozen outside of ICC and ACC tournaments. Matches between the two nations are high-revenue fixtures for broadcasters, but Sunday’s drama highlighted the growing strain in cricketing relations.

The fallout is expected to dominate upcoming ICC and ACC meetings. The BCCI is likely to push for Naqvi’s removal as ACC chairman, arguing that his political bias undermines the credibility of the governing body.
