Torrential Rains Cause Flooding in Hyderabad
Heavy rainfall lashed Hyderabad on Saturday, flooding several areas and raising the risk of further waterlogging in the city’s low-lying zones. The Old City was among the worst-affected regions, with streets submerged after the River Musi swelled beyond its safe capacity.
Officials confirmed that floodgates of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs were lifted following continuous inflow caused by the downpour. The move, while necessary to prevent dam breaches, has led to a surge of water flowing into the Musi, increasing danger for nearby communities.
The situation prompted immediate intervention from Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who instructed officials to carry out urgent evacuations in flood-prone zones.
Evacuations and Relief Measures
As floodwaters advanced into residential colonies, rescue teams and disaster response units were deployed to ensure safe evacuations. Hundreds of residents were shifted from vulnerable neighborhoods to temporary relief camps set up across the city.
Authorities confirmed that food, drinking water, and medical supplies are being provided to evacuees. Special teams have also been tasked with ensuring electricity supply safety and preventing waterborne diseases in relief camps.
Speaking to reporters, CM Revanth Reddy said: “Our priority is to save lives. Evacuations from low-lying areas are being conducted swiftly, and all necessary assistance is being extended.”
Traffic across the city was disrupted, with major arterial roads reporting severe congestion due to waterlogging. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) issued advisories urging people to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors unless essential.
River Musi Swells as Reservoirs Overflow
The River Musi, which runs through the heart of Hyderabad, witnessed a sharp rise in water levels as inflows from the two key reservoirs surged. Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, both already at full capacity, released excess water into the river to prevent breaches.
Experts warn that downstream areas, particularly those located along Musi’s banks, remain at high risk of flash flooding. Officials are closely monitoring water levels at key points, and sirens have been installed in some zones to alert residents in case of emergency releases.
The last time Hyderabad witnessed such intense flooding was during the October 2020 deluge, when heavy rains caused widespread destruction and over 50 deaths in the city.
CM Reddy’s Directives and Preparedness
In response to the crisis, CM Revanth Reddy directed the Hyderabad Collectorate, GHMC, and Disaster Management teams to remain on high alert. Additional police forces have been deployed to assist with evacuations and maintain law and order in affected areas.
Emergency control rooms have been activated to field distress calls, while the Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department continues round-the-clock operations in flood-hit localities.
The Chief Minister also appealed to citizens to cooperate with officials and relocate temporarily if advised. He assured that compensation and rehabilitation assistance would be provided to families affected by flooding.
Residents Express Concerns
Residents of Old City and surrounding neighborhoods expressed worry over repeated flooding incidents. Many said the situation highlighted poor urban planning and inadequate drainage systems.
A resident from Chaderghat remarked: “Every year we face floods when Musi swells. Authorities need a long-term solution, not just evacuations.”
Urban experts echo these concerns, stressing that Hyderabad’s rapid expansion has placed immense pressure on its natural drainage channels. They call for sustainable water management policies and infrastructure upgrades to minimize future flood risks.
Looking Ahead: Weather and Safety Warnings
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Hyderabad may continue to witness moderate to heavy rainfall over the coming days. Authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors, avoid waterlogged zones, and call helplines for assistance if stranded.
With relief operations underway, the administration has assured that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard lives. However, the disaster serves as a stark reminder of Hyderabad’s vulnerability to climate-related urban flooding.
