India optimistic about US lifting punitive tariffs by Nov 30; trade talks underway, says Chief Economic Adviser Nageswaran.
New Delhi: The US government’s penal duty on Indian imports may be lifted after November 30, according to Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran, who expressed optimism that trade relations between the two nations will significantly improve.
Regarding the trade issue between the United States and India, the senior official stated that efforts were underway to resolve the matter.
American tariffs could alter after November 30.
“I will take a moment to discuss the tariff here, as we are all already at work. It’s true that neither the initial 25% penal tax nor the 25% reciprocal penalty were expected. “Geopolitical circumstances may have contributed to the second 25% tariff, but given recent events over the past few weeks and so forth, I do believe that and I have no particular reason to say so it is my intuition that I do believe the penal tariff will not be there after November 30,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Within roughly ten weeks, CEA Nageswaran expressed confidence that the trade issues could be settled. Conversations between the two governments are taking on behind the scenes. According to news agency PTI, he stated, “I have a feeling that a resolution to the US tariff on Indian goods will be reached within the next eight to ten weeks.”
India tariffs imposed by Trump
Infuriated by India’s oil trade with Russia, US President Donald Trump levied an extra 25% tax on Indian goods. The total charge was increased to 50% after this was added to the previous 25% reciprocal tariff.
August 27 marked the start of the additional charges. Since then, Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have engaged in more constructive dialogue, which has changed the dynamic between India and the US.
