Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a strategic defense agreement a few days after an Israeli assault in the neighboring Qatari capital of Doha targeted Hamas officials.

In Riyadh: On Wednesday, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia inked a new deal on mutual defense, stating that any attack on one country would be considered “an act of aggression against both.” Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, who is presently conducting an official visit to Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman signed the deal in Riyadh.

Two days after Israel’s September 9 attack on the capital of Qatar, Doha, the two countries reached an agreement during an unprecedented joint session of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The Saudi Press Agency reported that a joint statement released on Wednesday stated that the agreement aims to strengthen joint deterrence against any aggression and develop aspects of defense cooperation between the two countries. It reflects the shared commitment of both nations to enhance their security and to achieve security and peace in the region and the world.

“The agreement states that any aggression against either country shall be considered an aggression against both,” it said.

India on Saudi Arabia and Pakistan agreement

In response to a question from the media regarding reports that Saudi Arabia and Pakistan had signed a strategic mutual defense pact, official spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Randhir Jaiswal stated that India would research the implications of this development for regional and global stability as well as for our own national security.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding India’s interests and maintaining total national security across the board.
