Nigeria Mosque Attack Kills 50 Worshippers
At least 50 people were killed when armed attackers stormed a mosque in Nigeria’s Katsina state during morning prayers on Tuesday, local authorities confirmed. The assault, which targeted worshippers in Unguwan Mantau town, has been described as one of the deadliest attacks in recent months.

According to state lawmaker Aminu Ibrahim, the assailants opened fire indiscriminately on worshippers gathered inside the mosque. The violence did not stop there. Attackers also raided nearby villages, spreading fear among residents.
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident unfolded quickly, leaving little chance for people to escape. Survivors recounted scenes of panic as gunmen surrounded the mosque and fired at anyone attempting to flee. Emergency responders have since confirmed a rising death toll, with at least 50 lives lost and several others injured.

The extremist group Boko Haram, along with its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has waged a deadly insurgency for over a decade. According to United Nations estimates, Boko Haram has killed more than 35,000 people and displaced over 2 million since 2009.
Although security crackdowns have weakened some insurgent networks, the continuing attacks highlight the scale of Nigeria’s security challenges.
Calls for Stronger Action
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation. Lawmakers urged the federal government to boost security deployment in rural areas and provide urgent humanitarian relief to victims’ families.
Civil society groups stressed the need for intelligence-led operations to dismantle armed groups operating across northern states. “Communities cannot continue to live in fear of violence during worship,” one rights activist said.
Analysts warn that unless security measures are strengthened, such attacks could further destabilize the region. The repeated targeting of religious sites also threatens intercommunal harmony, which is critical in Nigeria’s diverse society.
