Bihar Health Department Expands Rural Medical Workforce
Patna: The Bihar Health Department has appointed 410 new medical officers to strengthen healthcare delivery in rural areas. The announcement came during a one-day orientation and appointment ceremony at the Energy Auditorium on Tuesday, where Health Minister Sh. Mangal Pandey personally handed over the appointment letters.

The new doctors will serve in additional primary health centres (APHCs) across the state. According to officials, this recruitment drive is part of a larger effort to expand healthcare facilities, address staff shortages, and bring quality medical services closer to people in rural Bihar.
Health Minister Sh. Mangal Pandey highlighted that the department’s workforce is growing rapidly. He noted that specialist doctors, Ayush practitioners, paramedical staff, auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs), and general nurse midwives (GNMs) have also been recruited in large numbers in recent months.
Nearly 1,200 Doctors Recruited in Three Months
The minister underlined that the appointment of 410 MBBS doctors marks another major milestone. He further revealed that in the last three months alone, nearly 1,200 doctors have been appointed under the National Health Mission (NHM) through the State Health Committee.
Additionally, the recruitment process for more than 3,000 doctors is currently in its final stages. This expansion, he said, will not only strengthen primary health centres but also improve specialist care at district and sub-divisional hospitals.
The Health Department has also announced that new health sub-centres will be opened from next month. These centres will further improve access to healthcare in underserved regions.
Government’s Vision: Quality Healthcare for All
During the event, the minister praised the vision of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, noting that the state government’s goal is to ensure that people of Bihar receive quality medical services within the state.
He urged the newly recruited doctors to focus on patient-friendly service delivery. “Doctors must remain soft-spoken and dedicated to public service,” he said, emphasizing the importance of empathy in medical care.
The minister also stressed that rural healthcare remains a top priority. He said the induction of doctors into APHCs will address critical gaps in primary care delivery and reduce patient dependency on tertiary hospitals in urban areas.
Senior Officials Attend the Ceremony
The orientation programme was attended by several senior officials, including Health Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh, Executive Director of the Health Committee Suharsh Bhagat, Dr. Nilesh Ramchandra Devre, Vaibhav Chaudhary, and Amitabh Singh.
Department representatives said the induction drive reflects Bihar’s commitment to scaling up rural health infrastructure. They added that with continuous recruitment, the state is working to meet the targets of the National Health Mission and align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in health.
Officials further highlighted that the upcoming recruitments of over 3,000 doctors would be the largest single-phase medical induction in the state’s history.
Future Roadmap for Bihar’s Health Sector
Experts believe that Bihar’s rural health initiatives could significantly reduce the outflow of patients seeking treatment outside the state. Expanded primary health coverage is expected to ease the burden on district hospitals and improve patient outcomes.
The government is also focusing on preventive healthcare, maternal and child health, and strengthening telemedicine services. With more doctors posted in rural facilities, Bihar aims to achieve better doctor-patient ratios and reduce medical emergencies caused by delayed access.
While challenges such as infrastructure gaps and retention of doctors in rural areas remain, the Health Department is optimistic that continued recruitment and investment will transform the sector.
