Punjab Launches Ambitious Rural Sports Infrastructure Plan

Chandigarh: In a major push to promote sports and youth development, the Punjab Government has unveiled an ambitious project to construct 13,000 state-of-the-art rural sports grounds across the state. The initiative, launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, aims to empower budding athletes to pursue their Olympic dreams while also steering the youth away from drugs.

Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond revealed that construction work for 3,073 sports grounds has already begun in villages under the project’s first phase. He said the scheme marks a historic step in reviving Punjab’s rich sporting culture and providing young players with access to quality infrastructure.

“No meaningful efforts were made in the past to develop sports infrastructure or ensure the holistic growth of our youth. This government has chosen to prioritize sports as a way to create opportunities and inspire future champions,” Sond said.

Sports as a Shield Against Drug Abuse

The minister highlighted that the creation of village-level sports grounds will provide safe and productive spaces for young people, reducing the chances of them falling prey to drugs.

Punjab continues to face challenges from substance abuse, and the state government has launched an aggressive anti-drug campaign titled “Yudh Nashiyan Virudh” (War Against Drugs). According to Sond, sports are proving to be one of the strongest tools to keep youth engaged in positive pursuits.

“Sports will not only ignite passion among youngsters but also safeguard them from harmful addictions. These playgrounds will channel their energy in the right direction,” he said.

The government hopes the sports grounds will complement its rehabilitation efforts and become community hubs that foster fitness, teamwork, and discipline.

Coaches and International Exposure for Budding Players

To ensure quality training, Sond announced that renowned sportspersons who have represented India at international levels will be appointed as coaches. These coaches will guide and mentor young athletes in rural Punjab, giving them exposure to world-class techniques and training standards.

The minister said that the government is committed to providing both employment opportunities and sports facilities. By nurturing talent at the grassroots, Punjab aims to prepare a new generation of athletes who can compete at national and international stages, including the Olympics.

Sond further added that the state is determined to restore Punjab’s lost sporting glory. With facilities accessible in every village, the government believes that untapped rural talent will finally get the chance to shine.

Punjab Leads in Supporting Athletes

Punjab has already emerged as the first state in India to provide financial assistance to athletes even before they participate in international tournaments. This proactive approach has been credited with boosting morale and enabling players to perform without financial stress.

Officials claim that these policies are already yielding encouraging results, as more athletes from Punjab are securing places in national training camps and international competitions.

With the addition of thousands of new sports grounds, the government expects to take this momentum further, creating an ecosystem where talent meets opportunity.

Building a Sporting Future

The Punjab Government’s investment in sports infrastructure is not only about building physical grounds but also about creating pathways for holistic youth development. Officials said the long-term goal is to see rural Punjab emerge as a nursery of talent for India’s sporting ambitions.

Sond expressed confidence that the initiative will bear fruit, allowing Punjab’s youth to bring laurels to the state and the nation. “We are leaving no stone unturned to transform Punjab into a powerhouse of sports. Our youngsters have the passion and the talent, and now they will have the facilities as well,” he said.

By tying sports with employment, drug prevention, and international exposure, the government is positioning this initiative as a multi-pronged strategy for growth.
