Punjab Government Issues Strong Warning
Chandigarh : The Punjab Government has issued a public advisory warning citizens against the unlawful collection of personal data by unscrupulous operators. According to officials, credible reports indicate that certain private individuals and entities are illegally gathering sensitive information, allegedly on behalf of political parties.
A government spokesperson said that such activities are a direct violation of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act). The Act makes unauthorized collection, storage, or use of personal data without consent a punishable offence.
The state government has directed the local police to initiate strict action against offenders. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to register cases, investigate complaints, and ensure that violators face appropriate penalties.
Citizens Targeted in Financial Frauds
Authorities disclosed that several people who shared their personal information with unauthorized operators later became victims of scams and frauds. In multiple cases, citizens reported misuse of their phone numbers and one-time passwords (OTPs), leading to unauthorized withdrawals from their bank accounts.
Officials emphasized that cybercriminals often exploit personal details for financial gain. They warned that once data is leaked, it can be used repeatedly for phishing attempts, impersonation, and online fraud.
The government stressed that safeguarding personal information is now more critical than ever, given the rise in digital transactions.
Advisory: Do Not Share Data With Unverified Sources
In its advisory, the government urged residents not to disclose private information—such as Aadhaar numbers, bank details, or mobile OTPs—to any unauthorized person or agency.
“Citizens must remain vigilant and exercise caution. Sharing personal details with unverified operators can lead to misuse at any stage,” the official spokesperson said.
The statement further advised people to report suspicious activity to the nearest police station or cybercrime helpline immediately. Quick reporting, officials noted, can help authorities track fraud networks and prevent large-scale damage.
Legal Framework and Enforcement
The DPDP Act, 2023 provides a comprehensive framework for the lawful handling of personal data. It requires prior consent from individuals before any organization can collect or process their details. Violations are punishable with penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
Punjab authorities reiterated that political parties, companies, and private agencies are not exempt from compliance. The government clarified that no official agency has authorized the current collection drives reported in several districts.
Law enforcement bodies have already started monitoring suspected operators. Cyber units are working with banking institutions to track cases of fraud linked to unauthorized data collection.
Public Trust and Digital Safety
Experts say the warning reflects growing concerns over privacy breaches in India. With more citizens adopting digital platforms for governance, healthcare, and banking, data security has become a top priority.
By cautioning citizens, the Punjab Government aims to build awareness and strengthen public trust in digital services. Officials believe that better vigilance at the community level can reduce the success rate of fraudsters.
Citizens are also encouraged to use strong passwords, avoid sharing OTPs, and verify the authenticity of calls or messages claiming to represent government authorities.
