India-China Border Talks Resume After Years
New Delhi: The 24th round of Special Representative (SR) level talks between India and China concluded on Tuesday, 19 August 2025. The meeting, chaired by India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, was aimed at finding a permanent solution to the long-standing border dispute.
Although no final settlement was reached, both sides described the dialogue as a positive step. This was the second such meeting in the last eight months, after a gap of almost four years. The resumption reflects an intent to move past the tensions triggered by the Chinese military’s incursion into eastern Ladakh in 2020.
The discussions focused on maintaining peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), reducing military tensions, and building trust. Officials stressed that continued dialogue is essential to prevent further conflict and to create space for cooperation in trade and security.
Doval Highlights Modi-Xi Consensus
Ajit Doval noted that progress made after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, last October has given new direction to relations. He emphasized that the past nine months have seen relative calm on the border, which has created opportunities for both nations to move forward in other fields.
During his remarks, Doval confirmed that Prime Minister Modi will soon visit China. The visit is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and will coincide with the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin.
“Peace at the border is the foundation for trust and cooperation,” Doval said, underlining India’s commitment to a constructive dialogue.
Wang Yi Stresses Cooperation Ahead of Modi’s Visit
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi admitted that strained relations in recent years had harmed both sides. He called for greater trust, improved border management, and enhanced cross-border trade.
Wang described Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to China as “very important” for bilateral relations. He said the timing is right for both countries to expand cooperation in security, economy, and regional initiatives.
Beijing’s signaling of Modi’s trip as significant suggests a possible softening of positions, particularly as both nations prepare for the SCO meeting.
Strategic Implications for the US and Global Politics
The revival of talks between India and China carries wider geopolitical weight. For Washington, closer India-China coordination could be a setback. The United States has positioned India as a central partner in counterbalancing China through forums like the Quad.
However, the renewed engagement between New Delhi and Beijing could create fresh dynamics in Asia. Analysts argue that a thaw between the two rivals might allow them to reduce dependency on external powers and pursue more independent regional strategies.
India, while still closely aligned with the US, appears intent on balancing ties by keeping diplomatic channels open with China.
Looking Ahead
Both Doval and Wang Yi expressed their commitment to continue the dialogue. While the talks did not yield a breakthrough, the willingness to meet regularly marks progress compared to the years of stalemate since 2020.
Experts believe that maintaining calm along the LAC will be the immediate priority, with long-term solutions requiring patience and sustained negotiations. Modi’s upcoming visit to Tianjin for the SCO summit is expected to be the next major step in this evolving relationship.
The outcome of that visit could decide whether India-China ties enter a new era of cooperation or return to familiar tensions.
