Trump orders US withdrawal from 31 UN agencies and 35 international organizations, including WHO, UNESCO, and global environmental and security groups.

Washington:  US President Donald Trump signed a document authorizing the US to leave international organizations, agreements, and treaties that are “contrary to the interests” of the US.

The White House announced the withdrawal from 31 UN agencies and 35 non-UN organizations in a declaration of the Presidential Memoranda.

The International Solar Alliance, which is sponsored by France and India, and important environmental organizations like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) are examples of non-UN organizations.

Other non-UN organizations include the Global Counterterrorism Forum, the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation, the International Energy Forum, and the International Renewable Energy Agency.

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs, International Law Commission, International Trade Center, Peacebuilding Commission, UN Energy, UN Population Fund, and UN Water are among the important UN agencies from which the United States has withdrew.

According to the executive order, Trump instructed all executive departments and agencies to act immediately to implement the United States’ withdrawal from the organizations listed in the memorandum as soon as possible. He also stated that, for United Nations organizations, withdrawal would entail stopping support or participation in those organizations to the extent allowed by law.

It stated that Trump made his decision after reviewing the Secretary of State’s report and consulting with his Cabinet, concluding that the organizations’ involvement or support was against US interests.

The action was taken nearly a year after the Trump administration declared in January 2025 that it would leave the World Health Organization (WHO), citing poor handling of the COVID-19 epidemic. In July 2025, the United States withdrew from UNESCO, claiming that it was not in the “national interest” of the country.
