US Denies IRGC Claims of Ballistic Missile Strike on USS Abraham Lincoln

Pentagon refutes Tehran’s reports of "non-operational" carrier following Gulf tensions

THE GULF — Tensions in the Middle East reached a fever pitch on Friday as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy claimed its ballistic missiles successfully struck the USS Abraham Lincoln. According to Iranian state media, the precision operation rendered the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier non-operational, forcing it to retreat at high speed. However, Washington has swiftly dismissed these claims, describing them as entirely fabricated.

IRGC Claims “Precision Strike” in Operation True Promise 4
In a formal statement released through Sepah News, the IRGC announced that the USS Abraham Lincoln was targeted with four ballistic missiles. Tehran framed the assault as a key component of Operation True Promise 4, a retaliatory campaign following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iranian soil earlier this month.

Moreover, Iranian officials asserted that the strike group was “fleeing the area” after sustaining heavy damage. This narrative aligns with recent warnings from Iran’s new leadership, which vowed to transform regional waters into a “graveyard for aggressors.” Despite these bold assertions, the IRGC has yet to provide verifiable photographic or video evidence of a direct hit on the Nimitz-class vessel.

Washington Issues Firm Denial of Naval Casualties
The Pentagon and US Central Command (CENTCOM) responded almost immediately, stating that the carrier was never hit. Officials clarified that while missiles were indeed launched by Iranian forces, they “didn’t even come close” to the carrier strike group.

“The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group continues to support Operation Epic Fury,” CENTCOM noted in a public update. To reinforce this stance, the US military released fresh imagery of the carrier conducting routine flight operations in the Arabian Sea. While the US denied the carrier was damaged, officials did confirm a separate skirmish. Reports indicate that a US helicopter launched Hellfire missiles at an Iranian vessel that had approached the carrier strike group in a “threatening manner.”

Escalating Naval Warfare and Global Market Impact
The conflicting reports come amidst a broader surge in regional hostilities. Since the conflict intensified on February 28, the US has significantly increased its naval presence, described by the administration as a massive “armada.” This buildup aims to secure the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has recently attempted to disrupt commercial shipping.

Consequently, global oil prices have surged past the $100-per-barrel mark. The International Energy Agency warned that the continued targeting of naval assets and tankers could lead to unprecedented supply chain disruptions. As the war of words between Tehran and Washington continues, the risk of a direct, large-scale naval engagement remains a critical concern for international observers.
