KATHMANDU — In a move that has fundamentally reshaped the political landscape of the Himalayas, Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen Shah, was sworn in as the 47th Prime Minister of Nepal on Friday, March 27, 2026. At just 35 years old, the former structural engineer and rapper has become the youngest Prime Minister of Nepal. Moreover, he is the first individual from the Madhes region to hold the nation’s top executive post. President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath of office at a historic ceremony in Sheetal Niwas, attended by top diplomats and senior officials.
This transition follows a massive landslide victory for the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in the March 5 parliamentary elections. The RSP secured a staggering 182 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives. Consequently, this marks the first time since 1999 that a single party has won a clear majority without needing a coalition. Balen’s victory in the Jhapa-5 constituency was particularly symbolic, as he defeated four-time Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli by a massive margin of nearly 50,000 votes.
From Kathmandu Mayor to National Leadership
Balen first rose to prominence in 2022 when he won the Kathmandu mayoral election as an independent candidate. During his tenure, he earned widespread praise for his transparent governance and urban reform. Specifically, he transformed waste management, improved sanitation, and prioritized vocational training for nearly 70,000 youths. In his resignation letter as Mayor, he stated that he had performed his duties honestly for the welfare of the metropolis.
However, his journey to the premiership was paved by the Gen Z-led uprising of September 2025. This movement toppled the previous coalition government following nationwide protests against corruption and a controversial social media ban. Although Balen initially declined to lead an interim government, he joined the RSP in early 2026. He chose to seek a full democratic mandate, promising a “100-point commitment” to digitize government services and de-politicize the bureaucracy.
A Cultural and Technical Powerhouse
Balen’s appeal lies in his unique background as both a structural engineer and a celebrated musician. Born to an Ayurvedic practitioner, he holds a Master’s degree from VTU in Karnataka, India. Before entering politics, he was a famous figure in the underground rap scene, using his music to criticize social anomalies and political mismanagement. His YouTube channel, boasting over a million subscribers, remains a powerful tool for his direct communication with the youth.
Key Achievements as Mayor:
- Decentralized waste disposal systems.
- Created 60,000+ jobs via vocational training.
- Allocated free hospital beds for the poor.
- Spearheaded the preservation of cultural heritage.
The Road Ahead for the 47th Prime Minister
As Prime Minister, Balen now faces the daunting task of implementing the findings of the Karki Commission. This body was established to investigate the violence during the 2025 protests. His administration has promised to build an accountable public service system that bridges the gap between the capital and rural provinces. By speaking in Maithili during his campaign, he has already signaled a commitment to inclusivity for the Madhes and other marginalized regions.
Despite his massive popularity, critics remain watchful. Some point to his controversial use of demolitions during his mayoral term as a potential sign of an authoritarian streak. Nevertheless, the “Balen Tsunami” has clearly signaled that Nepal’s voters are finished with the “musical chair” politics of the old guard. As he steps into office, the world watches to see if a rapper’s vision can truly build a “beautiful garden” for Nepal.
