BROOKLYN, NY — A federal jury in Brooklyn has convicted Asif Merchant, a 48-year-old Pakistani national, for his role in a sophisticated, Iran-backed plot to kill Donald Trump and other high-ranking American officials. The verdict, delivered on Friday, March 6, 2026, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing national security crisis.
Prosecutors successfully argued that Merchant acted as a trained operative for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Furthermore, they proved he traveled to the United States in 2024 to recruit hitmen for the killings. This scheme was reportedly designed to avenge the 2020 death of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani.

The trial revealed that Merchant’s hit list extended beyond President Trump. It included former President Joe Biden and Republican leader Nikki Haley. Merchant admitted to meeting with IRGC handlers in Tehran, where he received training in counter-surveillance and intelligence.

The plot unraveled after Merchant contacted an individual in New York to help execute the plan. Unbeknownst to him, that person alerted the FBI and became a confidential informant. Merchant was recorded discussing scenarios for the assassinations and even paid a $5,000 cash advance to undercover agents he believed were professional killers.

The conviction comes at a time of unprecedented military escalation. While the jury deliberated in Brooklyn, the U.S. and Israel were actively conducting “Operation Epic Fury,” a massive airstrike campaign against Iranian leadership and infrastructure.
