New Delhi: WhatsApp’s upcoming Username feature has come under regulatory scrutiny in India, with the government reportedly sending a notice to Meta over potential cybersecurity risks. The proposed Username feature is designed to allow users to connect without sharing their mobile numbers, but authorities have raised concerns that it could be misused by cybercriminals.

According to officials, Meta has been asked to provide detailed information about the Username feature within three days, including how it will function and what safeguards will be implemented to prevent misuse.

Government Raises Security Concerns

The government has expressed concern that theWhatsApp Username feature could increase the risk of online fraud, phishing attacks, and impersonation cases. Officials fear that cybercriminals may create usernames similar to those of banks, government agencies, or trusted individuals to deceive users.

There are also concerns that such misuse could contribute to rising cases of “digital arrest” scams and other forms of cyber fraud, where victims are manipulated into sharing sensitive personal information or money.

Meta Asked to Clarify Functioning of Username System

Authorities have directed Meta to explain in detail how the WhatsApp Username feature will operate, particularly how user identity verification and safety controls will be enforced. The government has also asked for clarity on how the system will prevent impersonation and fraudulent accounts.

Until satisfactory responses are provided, officials have reportedly urged Meta not to roll out the Username feature in India.

What the WhatsApp Username Feature Offers

The WhatsApp Username feature is designed to enhance user privacy by allowing individuals to connect on WhatsApp without revealing their mobile numbers. This means users could communicate using a unique username instead of sharing personal contact details.

While this could improve privacy protection for many users, concerns remain about how safely the system can be implemented at scale, especially in a country with high volumes of cyber fraud cases.

Future of WhatsApp Username Feature in India

The future rollout of the WhatsApp Username feature in India now depends on Meta’s response and the government’s review of its safety framework. If the feature is deemed secure after evaluation, it may be allowed for launch in the country.

For now, the rollout of the Username feature remains uncertain, with both privacy benefits and security risks under close examination by authorities.
