Uttarakhand Becomes First Indian State to Launch a Comprehensive Yoga Policy

In a landmark move to position Uttarakhand as a global wellness destination, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday, June 21, unveiled India’s first-ever Yoga Policy 2025. The announcement was made in Gairsain, the summer capital of Uttarakhand, during celebrations marking the 11th International Yoga Day.

With an aim to institutionalize yoga as a healing and wellness science, the policy includes strategic initiatives, subsidies, and international partnerships to bolster the state’s identity as Devbhoomi – the land of spiritual and natural harmony.

Key Highlights of the Yoga Policy 2025

Government Support and Financial Incentives

  • A subsidy of up to Rs 20 lakh will be provided to entrepreneurs and organizations establishing yoga and wellness centres in the state.
  • Grants up to Rs 10 lakh will be allocated for research in yoga, meditation, and naturopathy.

Infrastructure Development

  • The state plans to create five new yoga hubs by 2030 under the policy.
  • AYUSH Health and Wellness Centers across Uttarakhand will be equipped to provide yoga services by March 2026.

Spiritual Economic Zones and New Cities

  • Two spiritual cities, one each in Garhwal and Kumaon regions, will be developed to serve as centers for yoga, Ayurveda, and spiritual tourism.
  • The government also plans to establish a Spiritual Economic Zone in each of these divisions to promote traditional healing and wellness practices.

Global Outreach and Cultural Diplomacy

In a symbolic gesture, CM Dhami performed collective yoga alongside dignitaries from eight friendly nations, emphasizing global collaboration. Notable attendees included the Ambassador of Mexico to India Federico Salas, and Ricardo Daniel Delgado, Head of Economic Affairs at the Mexican Embassy.

Making Uttarakhand a Global Yoga Capital

Chief Minister Dhami reiterated his government’s resolve to make Uttarakhand the “global capital of yoga and wellness.” “Yoga connects mind, soul, and body, and Uttarakhand, with its spiritual depth and natural beauty, is the ideal place to propagate this ancient wisdom,” he said.

He described yoga as a natural healing system that reduces stress, balances mental health, and promotes spiritual growth. Stressing the importance of daily yoga, he encouraged citizens to integrate it into their routines.

Promoting Local Participation and Awareness

  • During the event, CM Dhami interacted with local residents and students.
  • He planted an apple sapling under the campaign “Ek Vriksha, Yoga Ke Naam” at the Vidhan Sabha premises in Bhararisain.
  • Booklets detailing the new policy were distributed to attendees.

Strategic Timing and Vision

The launch aligns with growing global interest in holistic health and wellness tourism, offering Uttarakhand a unique opportunity to lead in this emerging sector.

The policy blends economic development with cultural heritage, and aligns with national goals of promoting Ayush and traditional healing systems.
