Deepavali, the festival of lights observed throughout India and internationally, has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced this achievement on social media, representing a notable international acknowledgment of one of India’s most treasured traditions.
The international organization characterized Deepavali as a celebration that signifies the triumph of light over darkness and virtue over vice. In its citation, UNESCO emphasized that Deepavali is observed annually by a wide range of individuals and communities. The festival encompasses the cleaning and adornment of homes, the illumination of lamps and candles, the lighting of pyrotechnics, and the offering of prayers for prosperity.
