Bareilly on High Alert Ahead of Dussehra
Security has been tightened in Bareilly division of Uttar Pradesh after recent clashes raised concerns over communal tension. Ahead of the Dussehra festivities, police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have been deployed across four districts. Drones are being used to monitor sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
Authorities have stationed forces at Ramlila grounds, Durga Puja fairs, and Ravan Dahan events, all of which attract massive crowds during the festival. Officials said that strict surveillance measures were essential to ensure smooth celebrations and public safety.
Internet Services Suspended for 48 Hours
The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a 48-hour suspension of internet services in Bareilly, including mobile data, broadband, and SMS facilities. The suspension began at 3 p.m. on Thursday and will remain in effect until 3 p.m. on October 4.
Officials explained that the decision was taken to prevent misuse of social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube, which could otherwise be used to spread rumours and incite violence.
“Maintaining peace and public order is our priority,” said a senior district official, adding that the temporary suspension was necessary given recent developments.
Clashes After Friday Prayers Spark Tension
The heightened security comes after violent unrest broke out in Bareilly on September 26. The incident began when a large group carrying placards reading “I Love Muhammad” and chanting slogans gathered after Friday prayers. The crowd marched towards Islamia Ground and Khalil School Chowk despite repeated police instructions to disperse.
When protesters began chanting “Nara-e-Taqbeer,” tensions escalated. Some individuals reportedly pelted stones at police personnel, prompting a baton charge by authorities. The police action triggered panic, leading to a stampede-like situation.
During the clashes, rioters damaged two motorcycles and vandalised a local shop. Slippers, shoes, and stones were scattered across a 200-metre stretch near Khalil Tiraha after the crowd dispersed.
Arrest of Tauqeer Raza
On September 27, police arrested Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, a local cleric and head of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council. Authorities said his endorsement of the “I Love Muhammad” campaign had contributed to the unrest.
A video message he posted online reportedly encouraged large gatherings, drawing hundreds of people outside his residence and raising fears of further violence. He has been placed in 14 days’ judicial custody as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) condemned Raza’s arrest and demanded his immediate release. The organisation criticised the Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the situation and accused it of targeting community leaders.
Authorities Focus on Preventing Further Violence
Officials said constant drone surveillance, additional barricades, and area patrolling will continue until the end of the festive season. Police have also increased monitoring around Bareilly’s sensitive religious and commercial areas.
Public appeals are being made to avoid spreading unverified rumours and to cooperate with security measures. Authorities stressed that maintaining law and order during Dussehra is critical for communal harmony.
