Judicial Probe of Sambhal Violence Report Handed Over
Lucknow, August 28 — A 450-page judicial probe report on the recent violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district was submitted to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday. The inquiry sheds light on the causes of the unrest, demographic shifts in the region, and the nature of the weapons used during clashes.
The violence erupted earlier this year after a court-mandated survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Chandausi, leading to widespread protests. The clashes claimed five lives, left dozens injured, and triggered large-scale arrests. The state government responded by ordering a judicial commission to examine the unrest.
Key Findings of the Report
According to the probe report, Sambhal has witnessed 15 riots since Independence. It further notes that the town’s demographic balance has changed significantly over the decades.
At Independence in 1947, Hindus accounted for 45% of Sambhal Nagar Palika’s population, while Muslims made up 55%. The report now estimates that Hindus constitute only 15% of the local population, compared to 85% Muslims.
BJP national spokespersons highlighted these demographic shifts after the report’s release. One post on X read: “Hindus in Sambhal: 1947 – 45%, now 15%. Demography is democracy’s destiny.”
Foreign Weapons Recovered
The report also raised concerns over the kind of arms discovered during police searches. Weapons recovered from the violence-hit areas were reportedly manufactured in the United Kingdom, USA, and Germany. Officials have yet to confirm how such weapons reached Sambhal, but the finding has added to security concerns.
Police registered cases against 400 individuals and arrested dozens following the clashes. In six of the 12 FIRs, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed a chargesheet of more than 4,000 pages, detailing evidence and witness accounts.
Commission and Judicial Inquiry
To ensure transparency, the state government set up a three-tier judicial inquiry commission. The panel is chaired by retired judge Devendra Arora, former DGP A.K. Jain, and former IAS officer Amit Mohan Prasad.
The commission’s mandate included examining the root causes of the violence, tracking external influences, and identifying administrative lapses. The 450-page report reflects months of testimonies, document reviews, and on-ground inspections.
Political and Social Reactions
The demographic findings of the report have triggered political debate. While BJP leaders underlined the demographic shift, opposition parties cautioned against communal polarization. Social groups also voiced concern, demanding that the government focus on restoring peace and ensuring long-term security in the district.
Locals in Sambhal remain anxious after the violence, though security has been tightened. Police continue to monitor sensitive areas, and authorities have appealed for calm.
Path Ahead for Sambhal
The Uttar Pradesh government has assured strict action based on the commission’s recommendations. Officials stated that law and order will not be compromised and any attempts to disturb communal harmony will be met with firm measures.
Additionally, the judicial panel has recommended closer surveillance on arms smuggling, stronger intelligence networks in border areas, and consistent monitoring of communal flashpoints.
