In honor of the 350th anniversary of the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru who is renowned for upholding religious freedom, the Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday proclaimed November 25 a public holiday. The notice is applicable to all state government departments, educational institutions, and schools.

The holiday on November 25 honors Guru Tegh Bahadur’s devotion and dedication to defending oppressed populations in the 17th century, as per an official decree. His execution in 1675, which followed his refusal to convert despite coercion from the Mughal government, is seen as a turning point in India’s history of religious tolerance and freedom.

Guru Tegh Bahadur, also known as “Hind di Chadar,” is honored for preserving civic freedoms and freedom of religion. The event, according to the state administration, is meant to raise awareness of his teachings on moral courage, equality, and compassion.
