Too Drunk to Flee: Thief Caught Sleeping After Robbing Two Houses in Kanpur
In an unusual turn of events, a thief who looted two homes in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur was caught red-handed after he fell asleep at one of the crime scenes. The accused, heavily intoxicated during the act, was found sleeping on a bed the next morning by the homeowners. The bizarre incident occurred in the Nazirabad area near the Maryampur railway line and has now gone viral for its sheer absurdity.
Double Robbery Ends in a Nap
According to police sources, the incident involved two brothers—Vinod Kumar and Anil Kumar—who live in adjacent homes. The thief first broke into Vinod’s home late at night. He reportedly ransacked cupboards and stole cash and valuables. Not stopping there, the burglar then moved next door to Anil’s residence.
Once inside Anil’s home, he managed to loot more jewellery and cash. However, overcome with exhaustion and intoxication, the thief lay down on a bed and fell asleep—unaware that this would lead to his arrest just hours later.
Homeowner Wakes Up to a Strange Scene
Early the next morning, Anil Kumar, who drives an e-rickshaw, woke up to find a stranger sleeping in his house. He grew suspicious and checked his cupboards, discovering them broken and emptied. Upon further inspection, he found the stolen jewellery and cash still on the sleeping man.
Anil’s wife, Babli, also woke up to the commotion. She confirmed that her missing jewellery was indeed in the thief’s possession. The family immediately alerted neighbors, who rushed to the scene.
The angry locals thrashed the thief before handing him over to the Nazirabad police.
Police Confirm Arrest and Legal Action
Nazirabad police confirmed that the thief has been arrested and a case has been registered against him. Authorities added that he was sent to jail after initial questioning.
Speaking to the media, a police official said, “The accused was under the influence of alcohol during the robbery. He has confessed to stealing from both houses. Further investigation is underway.”

The incident has become the talk of the town. Residents expressed shock and amusement in equal measure. “We’ve heard of smart criminals, but this one was just too lazy—or drunk—to run,” said a local shopkeeper.
