- Sultanpur Lodhi, Punjab
In a bold step toward transforming urban infrastructure in Punjab, Local Government Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh announced that Sultanpur Lodhi will undergo a complete transformation through 23 major development projects worth ₹240 crore, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The initiative, which aims to modernize the city and enhance the quality of life for residents, is being hailed as one of the most ambitious urban renewal programs in the region.
A Vision for a Modern, Livable Sultanpur Lodhi
Dr. Ravjot Singh addressing the media and other local officials stated, “The Mann government is committed to real, visible change being brought in cities like Sultanpur Lodhi. These 23 projects would change not only the face of the city but also the lives of the people, creating economic opportunities and restoring civic pride.”
He underlined that this much-needed transformation is reflected in the long-term master plan for Punjab cities to be developed as cleaner, green, and tech-savvy urban centers. Since Sultanpur Lodhi is counted as a historically important and spiritually revered town, the underlying focus will be on the dual goals of preserving heritage and introducing future-ready infrastructure.
Breakdown of ₹240 Crore Development Projects
The 23 projects will be implemented across key sectors including:
- Upgradation of sewerage and drainage systems to prevent urban flooding and waterlogging
- Construction and repair of city roads and inner streets with better connectivity and walkability
- Installation of LED street lighting for enhanced safety and energy efficiency
- Expansion of clean drinking water pipelines and storage systems under the Jal Jeevan Mission
- Development of green parks, open gyms, and community spaces
- Smart waste management solutions including segregation units and door-to-door collection
- Beautification of public places and heritage sites with better signage, landscaping, and accessibility
Officials noted that sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity will guide the implementation, ensuring that the benefits reach all citizens, especially those in underdeveloped areas.
Development with Accountability and Speed’-Dr. Ravjot Singh
Minister Singh underscored that these are not mere announcements, but projects ready for action with funds, timelines, and political will.
“Our approach is simple—identify the needs, allot the budget, and then execute with speed and transparency. Under the able leadership of CM Mann, we are now breaking away from a history of delays and excuses. The people of Sultanpur Lodhi deserve better, and we are going to make that happen for them,” he stated.
He added that during the rollout, regular public audits shall be held and feedback of the community shall be sought, with accountability at all points of time.
Blending Heritage with Modernity
Sultanpur Lodhi, known for its spiritual significance in Sikh history, will also see heritage-sensitive development. Officials revealed that beautification around religious sites and environmentally friendly construction practices will ensure that tradition and progress go hand-in-hand.
Green cover enhancement, tree plantation drives, and eco-friendly construction materials are also part of the master plan, aligning the projects with Punjab’s environmental commitments.
Public Reaction: ‘A New Era for Our City’
Local residents and civic leaders greeted the announcement with joy, labeling it a long-overdue transformation for one of Punjab’s most culturally rich cities. Many are hopeful that the government will facilitate timely and corruption-free execution.
“We have endured broken roads, blocked drains, and water shortages for years. If all these promises come to fruition, our way of life will indeed change,” stated a local shop owner, Harpreet Singh.
Citizens have expressed their willingness to participate in independent citizen monitoring groups, an initiative endorsed by the Local Government Department to ensure transparency.
A Model for Future Cities in Punjab
The Sultanpur Lodhi development package is being viewed as a pilot model for similar transformations planned across other towns in Punjab. The Mann government has already hinted at replicating this multi-sectoral development model in cities like Patiala, Hoshiarpur, Bathinda, and Ferozepur.
“Urban Punjab will not lag behind. With these projects, we are not just constructing buildings—we are building futures,” Dr. Ravjot Singh concluded.
