Punjab Vigilance Bureau detains Jalandhar Municipal clerk Karun Dhir accepting Rs 2,000 bribe; Rs 2.72 lakh recovered from his house.
During its ongoing anti-corruption drive in the state, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) detained Karun Dhir, Clerk at the Water Supply and Sewerage Branch, Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, while collecting a bribe of Rs. 2000. During the search, the VB team collected Rs. 2.72 lakh from the accused’s house.
An official spokesperson for the state VB said today that the above-mentioned offender was detained in response to a complaint submitted by a resident of Ram Nagar, Jalandhar.
He stated that the complainant has been running an Ahata near Doaba Chowk in Jalandhar for the past fifteen months. Complainant said that accused Karan Dhir came to his Ahata and threatened to disconnect the water and sewerage connections under the guise of suspected illegal connection and discharge of unclean water into sewage.

Despite the complainant’s explanation that the links had been in place for about 15 years, the accused official proceeded to intimidate him and seek illicit gratification, he stated.
He also stated that the complainant approached the VB and claimed that the accused Karun Dhir had requested a payment of Rs 2000/- in exchange for not cutting the water and sewerage lines. The complainant had recorded the entire conversation in which he demanded a bribe.
The spokesperson stated that after conducting a preliminary investigation into his complaint, it was discovered that the accused used to accept minor bribes from persons who wanted to have things done. Acting on the complaint, the VB team set a trap in which the accused was detained while collecting a bribe of Rs 2000/- from the complainant in front of two official witnesses. In this regard, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been recorded against the accused at the VB Police Station in Jalandhar, and further investigation is underway.
