Punjab Police seize heroin, opium, and poppy husk during 313 raids; CM Bhagwant Singh Mann pushes for a drug-free state with 261-day anti-drug drive.

Following 57 first information reports (FIRs) being filed throughout the state, Punjab Police conducted raids at 313 locations on Monday, leading to the arrest of 68 drug smugglers as part of the ongoing “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign against drugs, which CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has been waging for the 261st day in a row. This brings the total number of drug smugglers detained in 261 days to 36,969 people.

During the raids, 2.2 kilograms of heroin, 500 grams of opium, 11 kg of poppy husk, 2168 intoxicant tablets, and Rs 1.88 lakhs in drug money were found in the custody of drug smugglers who had been detained.

Notably, the CM has requested that the Senior Superintendent of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and Commissioners of Police declare Punjab a drug-free state. A five-member Cabinet Subcommittee headed by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has also been established by the Punjab government to oversee the anti-drug campaign.

313 raids have been carried out around the state by more than 120 police teams, which consist of more than 1000 police officers, overseen by 75 gazetted officers. Over the course of the daylong operation, police teams have also inspected up to 335 questionable individuals.

To eradicate drugs from the state, the state government has implemented a three-pronged strategy: Enforcement, Drug Abuse, and Prevention (EDP). Today, the Punjab Police, as part of “De-addiction,” persuaded 23 people to receive rehabilitation and de-addiction treatment.
