Punjab govt forms expert panel to assess 14 dams’ safety, review flood protection, and approve 187 crore feet river silt removal after recent floods.

The safety of Punjab’s dams is being investigated by the Punjab govt. Ranjit Sagar is one of 14 dams whose security has begun to be assessed. In this regard, a panel of independent experts has been assembled and is now working on the report. The dams will be protected by taking the necessary actions in light of this assessment.

The state has been devastated by the floods this time. The opposition had many questions once the Madhopur Headworks‘ gates were broken. For this reason, the government has now made the decision to evaluate each dam’s safety. AK Bajaj has been nominated by the government to lead the expert panel for Ranjit Sagar Dam’s Dam Safety and Hydro Mechanical Experts.

During the study, the panel has the authority to hire any expert whose counsel is required for a security evaluation. Like other panel members, he will be qualified to receive travel and diligent allowances. The available data on the dam’s design, construction, operation, maintenance, and performance will be examined and analyzed by the panel. In addition to this, the dam’s seismic and flood safety will be examined. The report will cover all of these topics, including the dam’s current state and potential plans for future flood protection. Additionally, the panel may urge more in-depth research if necessary.

Rivers in Quebec will provide 187 crore feet of silt.

The department has also approved the removal of 187 crore Quebec feet of silt from the rivers, and work will shortly begin at 87 locations that have been selected. For this, the agency has also received approval. Other rivers, like as the Sarsa, Ghaggar, Sutlej, Ravi, and Beas, have had their silting processes finished by the department.

The headworks had been devastated.

Massive damage had been caused by the floods at the Madhopur headworks near Pathankot. The government was attacked by the opposition, who claimed that the headworks’ gates were broken and that they had not been opened in a timely manner. Strict measures were taken in this regard, though. A JE, SDO, and XEN had been suspended by the department. While PM Modi had offered a grant of Rs 1600 crore for relief efforts during his visit to Punjab, the government claims that the floods had inflicted a loss of Rs 13 thousand crore, a report of which was also given to the Center.
