ASHA Workers to Receive Maternity Benefits Under New Rules
Chandigarh – In a major relief for grassroots health workers, the Punjab Government has formally notified maternity leave benefits for ASHA workers and facilitators. The announcement came after Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema held a series of meetings with representatives of five employee unions to address their long-standing demands.
The move aligns with the Maternity Benefits Act, 1961, ensuring that ASHA workers and facilitators will now receive a fixed monthly honorarium during maternity leave. Moreover, any future amendments to the Act will also apply to them.
During the meeting, the ASHA Workers Te Facilitators Nirol Union expressed gratitude to the Finance Minister for fulfilling their long-pending demand. Cheema, who also chairs the Cabinet Sub-Committee on employee issues, congratulated the union, noting that this step recognizes the crucial role played by ASHA workers in rural healthcare delivery.
Meetings With Five Employee Unions
The Finance Minister met union leaders at the Punjab Secretariat, where discussions were held with:
- Janglaat Workers Union
- Asha Worker Te Facilitator Nirol Union
- Adarsh School Teaching Non Teaching Mulazam Union
- E.T.T TET Pass Adhyapak Association (Jai Singh Wala)
- Beruzgar PSTET Pass Art & Craft Sangharsh Union
Cheema directed officials to act promptly on all legitimate demands. Departments have been instructed to draft proposals for issues linked to the Finance Department and submit them for review.
The unions highlighted various challenges, ranging from pending wages to job security concerns. In response, Cheema assured the groups that the government remains committed to resolving their grievances.
Govt Promises Continued Dialogue
Reiterating the government’s approach, Cheema said regular dialogue will continue until all reasonable demands are addressed. “We are committed to ensuring fair treatment for every section of employees,” he said, urging departments to expedite the decision-making process.
Leaders present included Jaswinder Singh, Sulakhan Singh Mohali, and Satnam Singh Sangrur from the Janglaat Workers Union; Kirandeep Kaur Panjola, Shinderpal Kaur Balianwali, and Kiranjit Kaur Mansa from the ASHA union; Jasvir Singh Galoti and Sukhdeep Kaur Saran from the Adarsh School Teaching Non Teaching Mulazam Union; Kamal Thakur and Sohan Singh Barnala from the E.T.T TET Pass Adhyapak Association; and representatives from the PSTET Pass Art & Craft Sangharsh Union.
The announcement has been widely welcomed, especially among women health workers who have long advocated for better recognition and welfare measures. Observers say the move will strengthen Punjab’s rural health infrastructure by motivating ASHA workers and ensuring better retention.
