Punjab government to launch 100 mini buses connecting rural areas with cities; buses will be BS-VI compliant, eco-friendly, and start by Feb-March 2026.
The Punjab government is set to enhance the state’s public transport network by introducing mini buses connecting cities with rural areas. As part of this initiative, 100 new mini buses will be purchased, with tenders already issued through the Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC). The move aims to make travel more convenient, safe, and affordable, particularly for rural residents.
Officials have stated that if the tender process proceeds as planned, the new mini buses are expected to start operating by late February or early March. A pre-bid meeting for interested companies is scheduled for January 23, after which financial bids will be invited and the final decision finalized.
All buses will adhere to BS-VI emission standards, making them eco-friendly. Designed as city/urban category OBDA buses, they will primarily serve short to medium routes linking villages and urban centers. The government expects the introduction of BS-VI buses to improve public transport quality while reducing pollution.

The project is also set to generate employment opportunities in bus operations, maintenance, and related services, benefiting local youth. Rural residents will gain easier access to education, healthcare, and jobs in nearby towns and cities.
Notably, around a month ago, the Punjab government issued permits to 505 mini bus operators. Under government guidelines, each bus will serve 5–6 villages, covering routes of approximately 35 kilometers, with nearly 19,000 kilometers of rural roads slated for development. This initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening Punjab’s rural transport infrastructure and enhancing connectivity between villages and cities.
