Punjab Government launches “Next Generation Road Renovation Program” in Mohali; 80 km roads to be upgraded with Rs. 700 crore investment and 10-year maintenance.

In a major initiative to enhance urban road infrastructure, the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has launched the “Next Generation Road Renovation Program” in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali). The project aims to quickly upgrade major roads and key junctions in the city, improving connectivity and facilitating smoother movement for commuters. The program will follow the NHAI model under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), ensuring durable roads along with a 10-year maintenance plan.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian, addressing the media at Punjab Bhawan, stated that the Mann-led government is continuously focusing on strengthening road infrastructure across the state to provide better connectivity and transportation facilities. While major state highways and rural roads are being upgraded as a priority, the government has now initiated comprehensive road renovation works in Mohali, the largest urban centre of Punjab.

The minister highlighted that the city’s Master Plan has guided the formulation of this dedicated program to modernize core infrastructure. Major roads and junctions under GMADA and the Municipal Corporation will be upgraded rapidly, with key arterial roads strengthened to address traffic congestion. Damaged roads will be repaired and resurfaced to provide safe and comfortable commuting for residents and visitors.

Mundian also emphasized that the project will focus on beautifying roads and important junctions. The beautification will include landscaping, installation of modern lighting systems, and enhancing green cover, improving both urban aesthetics and environmental quality.

All works will follow the NHAI framework under the Hybrid Annuity Model, with the contractor responsible not only for construction but also for 10 years of maintenance. Payments will follow a 40:60 structure, with 40 percent of the cost paid during construction and the remaining 60 percent covered by the contractor and reimbursed through annuity payments over 10 years. This model ensures accountability and long-term quality maintenance.

Road renovation in Mohali is scheduled to begin in February and is expected to be completed by October this year. Approximately Rs. 700 crore will be invested to renovate around 80 kilometres of roads in the city. Departments and senior officials have been instructed to complete the work within the specified timelines while maintaining strict quality standards.

The minister noted that these initiatives will enhance road safety, ease traffic flow, and boost economic activity in the region. The upgraded infrastructure is also expected to improve the city’s appearance and quality of life for residents.

Reiterating the government’s commitment, Mundian said the Punjab Government remains dedicated to providing modern, citizen-centric infrastructure and a clean, well-planned urban environment, with similar development initiatives to continue in the future.
