Punjab Govt stops 64 child marriage, appoints 2,076 officers to protect children, ensuring their safety and ending this social evil across the state.

The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is making continuous, powerful, and result-oriented efforts to remove the social evil of child marriage in the state. This was said by Dr Baljit Kaur, Minister of Social Security, Women, and Child Development, while emphasizing the government’s child-centric and sensitive policy approach.

Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur revealed that during the current fiscal year 2025-26, the Punjab government effectively intervened in 64 cases of child marriages, assuring timely action to safeguard children and respect their rights. “These interventions reflect the Mann Government’s firm resolve to act promptly and decisively wherever the rights and future of children are at risk,” she told the press.

The Minister encouraged the public to actively participate in this effort, saying, “Any instance of child marriages should be reported immediately and without hesitation by contacting the nearest Child Marriage Prevention Officer or by calling the Child Helpline 1098, so that timely intervention can be ensured and children can be safeguarded.”

Minister Dr Baljit Kaur further stated that all personnel appointed for child marriage prevention in Punjab have been listed on the Government of India’s National Child Marriage Free Portal, assuring transparency and simple public access. “This enables citizens to reach out to the concerned authorities quickly and effectively,” according to her.

The Minister highlighted the state’s administrative initiatives, stating that 2,076 Child Marriage Prevention Officers have been appointed at the district and block levels across Punjab to ensure the holistic development of children and to entirely eradicate child marriages. “These officers are actively performing their responsibilities and working at the grassroots to prevent this social evil,” she informed us.

She also stated that Child Development Project Officers and principals of government senior secondary schools in all districts managed by the Social Security Department have been designated as Child Marriages Prevention Officers. “This expanded network ensures vigilance at the local level and strengthens our ability to intervene at the earliest stage,” Baljit Kaur, MD, stated.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment, saying, “The Punjab Government remains fully proactive and committed to protecting the rights of children, securing their future, and making the state completely free from child marriage through strong, timely, and result-oriented measures.”
