Punjab Leads Digital Revolution in Cooperative Banking with Finacle 10 Upgrade

In a landmark achievement for rural banking, Punjab has become the first state in India to upgrade its cooperative banks to the advanced Finacle 10 core banking system. The Central Cooperative Banks of SAS Nagar and Ropar have successfully migrated from the older Finacle 7 platform to the more robust and secure Finacle 10, setting a national precedent in the cooperative sector’s digital transformation.

This move is part of Punjab’s broader push towards modernising financial services and bringing secure, efficient, and transparent banking to rural and agricultural communities.

Under Bhagwant Mann’s Leadership, Punjab Pushes Banking Innovation

The historic upgrade has been carried out under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, whose focus on digital reform and rural empowerment has accelerated innovations in the cooperative banking ecosystem.

Chief Minister Mann’s administration has been keen on bridging the digital divide in financial infrastructure, especially for farmers and small businesses dependent on cooperative institutions.

Strategic Leadership Behind the Digital Shift

The transition to Finacle 10 was spearheaded by Alok Shekhar, Financial Commissioner Cooperation, who played a crucial role in the project’s strategic planning and execution.

Shekhar noted,

“The successful upgrade to Finacle 10 reflects Punjab’s commitment to strengthening rural banking infrastructure through technology. It is a major step toward delivering efficient, secure, and transparent banking services across the cooperative network.”

His leadership ensured close coordination among district-level teams, software providers, and state authorities throughout the implementation.

Enhanced Services, Faster Transactions, and Stronger Security

According to Harjit Singh Sandhu, MD of the Punjab State Cooperative Bank (PSCB), the move to Finacle 10 enhances the IT backbone of the banking network.

He stated,

“With Finacle 10, our banks are now equipped to offer better customer service, quicker transactions, and robust cybersecurity features. This upgradation positions us to meet the evolving needs of our customers, especially in rural and agricultural sectors.”

Sandhu also commended the dedication of the MDs, DMs, and IT teams of both SAS Nagar and Ropar District Central Cooperative Banks for successfully completing the complex upgrade.

A Model for the Nation

Girish Dayalan, Registrar of Cooperative Societies, was also instrumental in ensuring smooth coordination during the transition. His support helped manage logistics, training, and technology integration.

The successful implementation is now being viewed as a model for nationwide cooperative banking reforms. Other cooperative banks in Punjab are expected to follow suit, adopting Finacle 10 in a phased rollout over the coming months.

Why This Matters

The move to Finacle 10 offers:

  • Real-time banking capabilities
  • Enhanced cybersecurity
  • Better scalability for future innovations
  • Seamless integration with mobile and digital services
  • Improved transparency and monitoring for regulators

For rural customers, especially farmers and self-help groups, this means faster loan approvals, real-time fund transfers, and access to modern banking facilities without depending on commercial banks.
