Haryana requests CBI investigation into the mysterious death of Aqil Akhtar, son of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa, amid political and family controversy.

Aqil Akhtar, the son of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa, died on October 16. The Haryana government has written to the Center urging the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into the incident.

Under strange circumstances, Aqil, 35, was discovered dead at the family’s home in Panchkula’s Mansa Devi Complex. Aqil’s wife, Mustafa, and his wife and former Punjab minister Razia  Sultana were charged with murder and criminal conspiracy by the Panchkula police on October 20 after Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a resident of Malerkotla, Punjab, submitted a complaint on October 17.

One of the reasons the matter was referred to the CBI, according to sources, was because of the accused’s “significant political and bureaucratic influence, which may impact the perception about objectivity and independence of the ongoing investigation.” According to a senior government official, “an independent central agency must conduct the probe given the nature of the allegations and the sensitivity involved to ensure public confidence.”

“Examination of digital forensic evidence, social media content, call detail records, and possible links across multiple state jurisdictions” was another rationale given for the case. “An agency with specialized knowledge and national jurisdiction may be better equipped to handle these aspects,” the officer stated.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 103 (1) (murder) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) have been invoked by the police. “On August 27, Aqil shared a video on social media in which he made grave accusations against his father and his wife, claiming that he had found them having illicit relations,” Shamshudeen wrote in the lawsuit. He added that everyone in his family, including his mother and sister, was planning to have him killed or falsely accused. He made no secret of his fear that they would kill him and that his life was in jeopardy.

The complainant said that “his apprehensions were confirmed by the news of his sudden death.” “Foul play is obviously involved. Given his previous video statement and the grave accusations contained within, a comprehensive, equitable, and unbiased investigation into the cause of death is necessary,” he stated.

Mustafa, however, said that his son had been abusing drugs for the last eighteen years. He even implied that a drug overdose might have been the cause of his death. Mustafa told reporters on Wednesday that his sickness frequently caused him to get violent. For years, he claimed, his family suffered from this mental illness.

The former DGP claimed that his condition deteriorated to the point that he was unable to comprehend his own words or actions. His son uploaded the video to social media on August 27 and took it off two hours later, according to Aqil. “However, some individuals downloaded it and are currently abusing it to disparage the family,” he stated.
