Batala Police arrest key associate of gangster Nishan Joriyan in firing and extortion case; 9MM pistol and motorcycle seized, police manhunt ongoing.

Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav announced here that Batala Police had arrested a key associate of gangster Nishan Joriyan involved in the firing incident linked to an extortion bid in Batala and recovered one 9MM Glock pistol from his possession, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to make Punjab a safe and secure state in accordance with directives from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.

Lovejeet Singh, also known as Kaka or Kawaljit, a native of Vairowal Bawia in Batala, has been identified as the apprehended accused. In addition to finding the gun, police teams seized the motorcycle he was riding.

The apprehended accused and his companion, according to the DGP, fired shots at a Batala cellphone shop on November 21 after demanding ₹2 crore in extortion in the name of criminal Nishan Joriyan. According to him, more research is underway to identify forward and backward connections and identify the handlers responsible for the extortion plot.

According to DIG Border Range Sandeep Goel, special teams were formed to look into the event under the direction of SP Investigation Gurpartap Singh Sahota. He claimed that after conducting technical and human investigations, police officers were able to apprehend the accused as he was riding his motorcycle from the hamlet of Kudawali.

According to the DIG, the accused opened fire on the police party during the operation when the police teams attempted to capture him. The accused was shot in the left leg as a result of the retaliatory firing.Mehtab Singh, the arrested suspect, has been receiving treatment at Civil Hospital Batala, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Batala. He stated that police are conducting a manhunt to find the last suspected individual connected to the fire event.

Three distinct cases have been filed in this regard: FIR no. 216, dated November 20, 2025, at Police Station City Batala, under section 308 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS); FIR no. 354, dated November 21, 2025, under sections 109 and 305 of the BNS and section 25 of the Arms Act; and FIR no. 219, dated November 27, 2025, at Police Station Dera Baba Nanak, under sections 109 of the BNS and section 25 of the Arms Act.
