AAP MP Meet Hayer slams the Centre for “testing Punjab’s patience” over Chandigarh, PU centralization and BSF powers, calling it injustice to Punjab’s rights.
The Central Government is repeatedly “testing the patience of Punjabis” by bringing up Punjab’s most delicate issues, including Chandigarh’s status, the centralization of Punjab University, the dissolution of the University Senate/electorate, and plans to turn Chandigarh into a Union Territory governed by a Lieutenant Governor, according to a strong statement released by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer today following the parliamentary session.
Instead, he added, the Center should fulfill the long-standing national pledge that Chandigarh was constructed as Punjab’s capital and must be entirely transferred to Punjab. The only state in the nation without a capital is still Punjab. He urged the Indian government to keep its word, saying, “This is a serious injustice to the state that made the greatest sacrifices for India and ensured national food security.”
Meet Hayer was reminded that the majority of important administrative officials are from Punjab, and the governor of Punjab still doubles as the administrator of Chandigarh. The Center is attempting to distance Chandigarh from Punjab in spite of all of this. We are adamantly against this,” he said.
In response to a question from the media regarding comments made by Akali leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Meet Hayer stated that everyone in Punjab is aware of the government under which synthetic drugs like Chitta are distributed and whose friends’ names have frequently come up in drug investigations.

He denounced Harsimrat Kaur Badal’s startling declaration endorsing greater BSF central authority within Punjab. All Punjab MPs, regardless of party, battled for the state’s federal rights for decades. At one point, even the Akali Dal supported giving the state additional authority. However, Badals are prepared to cede control of Punjab to the Center via the BSF today at the BJP’s direction,” he stated.”Those who were unable to defend Punjab in the past now wish to transfer Punjab’s power to the Center.” What agreement did they reach with the BJP? Punjabis are entitled to know,” he continued.
Meet Hayer explained that any criminal or disruptive elements operating within Punjab are promptly and fearlessly dealt with by Punjab Police. “Anyone who attempts to cause unrest in Punjab faces severe legal repercussions. According to the law, many of these features have been removed,” he stated. He stated that the Punjab government constantly works with central agencies to entirely stop criminals working from other states, jails outside of Punjab, or from overseas. “We are pursuing every channel to finish their networks, whether they are hiding outside of Punjab or outside of India,” he continued.
In response to another question from the media, Meet Hayer blasted the Shiromani Akali Dal for their complaints regarding elections for local bodies.According to him, Punjabis vividly recall how elections for local bodies and district councils were won through the use of government machinery under Akali administration, with no opposition party nominations in any of the districts. Could it be that entire districts don’t even have a single candidate? He claimed that was the Akali era.
The scenario is reversed today. Villagers refuse to run on the Akali Dal’s ticket because they are insulted and furious, and the party is unable to find candidates. Although our candidates submit nominations, Akalis finds it difficult to persuade even one individual to run. That’s the true cause of their commotion,” Meet Hayer said.
