Haryana Roadways Bus Accident Leaves Six Students Injured
Six college girls were injured after falling from an overcrowded Haryana Roadways bus at the Pratap Nagar bus stand in Yamunanagar on Thursday morning. The accident occurred around 8 am when the bus travelling from Paonta Sahib to New Delhi reached the stop where dozens of students were waiting to board.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus was late, and as soon as it approached the stand, students rushed to climb on. However, instead of coming to a halt, the driver allegedly accelerated. Due to this sudden movement, six girls lost their balance, slipped, and were run over by the rear wheels of the bus.
The victims were immediately taken to a nearby hospital. Two of them, identified as Aarti from Kutipur village and another unnamed student, are in critical condition. Aarti sustained severe abdominal injuries. The remaining students suffered fractures and bruises.
Students Blame Overcrowding and Driver Negligence
Archita, a BTech third-semester student from GMIT College, shared her account from the hospital bed. She said the bus arrived later than usual, increasing the crowd at the stand. “Before the bus could stop, the driver sped up. We fell and came under the wheels,” she recounted. Archita has suffered a fracture in her right leg.
Another student, Anjali, a final-year BCA student from DAV College, blamed the shortage of buses on the route. She said that students face this risk every day due to overcrowding. “Girls depend on government buses as private transport is expensive. Still, we are not safe,” she added.
The other injured girls were identified as Muskan from Tibbi, Sanjana from Bahadurpur, and Anjali and Amandeep from Pratap Nagar.
Public Transport Crisis Raises Safety Concerns
Students from nearby towns rely heavily on Haryana Roadways buses. While girls are allowed free travel in government buses, private cabs charge up to ₹2,000 per month. Except for DAV Girls College, no other college in the area provides its own bus service. Therefore, hundreds of students depend on limited public transport every morning.
Residents claimed that bus overcrowding and negligent driving are common issues. They demanded strict action against the driver and better transport facilities for students. Authorities have taken the driver into custody, and further investigation is underway.
Officials said that a report has been sent to higher authorities. They assured that appropriate action would be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
