The tragic incident at UN Mehta Hospital in Gujarat has sparked widespread outrage after one housekeeping worker lost his life and two others were critically injured while cleaning a drainage line inside the hospital premises in Ahmedabad.
According to preliminary information, three housekeeping employees were allegedly sent into a sewer without adequate safety equipment during drainage maintenance work. The incident has raised serious concerns about workplace safety and the treatment of contract workers at UN Mehta Hospital in Gujarat.
AAP Gujarat leaders, including State Organisation Secretary and Chief Spokesperson Dr. Karan Barot and Hospital Care Committee President Vinod Parmar, visited the hospital and demanded strict legal action against those responsible.
AAP Alleges Workers Were Forced to Enter Sewer
Speaking to the media, Dr. Karan Barot claimed that the incident at UN Mehta Hospital in Gujarat was the result of gross negligence.
He alleged that the housekeeping staff were forced to enter the sewer despite it not being part of their official duties. According to AAP, family members of the workers claimed they were threatened with losing their jobs if they refused to carry out the hazardous work.
The party also questioned why proper safety equipment and protective gear were not provided before sending the workers into the drainage line.

Dr. Barot said the life of a sanitation worker is as valuable as that of any doctor or healthcare professional and called for exemplary punishment to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He also urged the Gujarat government to provide substantial compensation and long-term financial support to the deceased worker’s wife and young daughter.

AAP leaders criticised the alleged lack of safety protocols and questioned why young contract workers were assigned hazardous sewer cleaning work without proper training or equipment.

According to Dr. Barot, police have registered an FIR, and the information shared by the victims’ families has been submitted as part of the investigation.
