NEW DELHI — Tensions escalated across the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi campus this weekend. Student representatives formally accused law enforcement of conducting unauthorized IIT Delhi police surveillance protests monitoring following the tragic death of 31-year-old MSc student Rishikesh Kumar.
Student groups announced a temporary pause on demonstrations while awaiting an external probe panel report. However, they released a statement highlighting grave concerns over plainclothes police entering campus grounds without official administrative clearance.
Disproportionate Monitoring Alleged During Peaceful Campus Demonstrations
Students stated that campus security and police personnel subjected them to continuous audio-visual monitoring. Moreover, protesters reported that plainclothes officers provided no official explanation for their presence inside academic zones.
The student body also reported a physical altercation involving campus security. According to their statement, security personnel physically pushed a female student protester after she objected to being filmed without consent.

Students Refute Director’s Claims of Threatening Slogans
The student body strongly rejected allegations made in an email sent by Institute Director Rangan Banerjee. The director had warned students against disciplinary measures for disrupting campus peace through threatening slogans.
However, students clarified that their chants were appeals for faculty solidarity rather than aggressive confrontation. Additionally, they noted that marches deliberately avoided campus medical centers and women’s hostels to protect privacy and emergency routes.
Administrative Probe Formed as Protests Pause Temporarily
The agitation follows the death of Rishikesh Kumar, who fell from the sixth floor of the Lecture Hall Complex. In response, the institute agreed to set up an external probe committee to examine institutional lapses.
The student body decided to pause active demonstrations until the inquiry panel completes its investigation. Nevertheless, the IIT Delhi police surveillance protests issue has raised broader questions about police authority and campus autonomy across premier educational institutions.
