DTL will build a 400 kV sub-station to boost Delhi’s power supply and reduce dependence on Mandola. A new sub-station is also planned in Gopalpur to prevent local disruptions.

Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) plans to build a new 400 kV substation in Gopalpur, North Delhi, to lessen its crucial reliance on the Mandola substation and stop a recurrence of significant power outages. The decision comes after previous disturbances that impacted the capital’s vital infrastructure and hundreds of thousands of citizens.

Resolving Mandola Substation Dependency

Large areas of North and East Delhi are being supplied with 1,200 megawatts of energy by the 400 kV substation of the Power Grid Corporation of India located at Mandola, Ghaziabad. However, the city’s power supply has been interrupted on multiple occasions due to issues at this facility.

Around 800,000 people in North Delhi lost power in August 2025 due to a malfunction at the Mandola substation, which also affected the metro system and the international bus terminal at Kashmere Gate.

In June 2024, a similar disturbance took place.

Suggested Improvements to the Infrastructure

The Delhi Operational Coordination Committee recently reviewed the following steps to fortify the electrical grid:

New 400 kV Gopalpur Substation: To give North Delhi an alternate power supply, the main project is building a new substation at Gopalpur.

Substation Interconnection: To enhance local supply, a plan has been put forth to link the 220 kV Timarpur and Sarita Vihar substations.

Maintaining Power in Critical Areas Without Interruptions

A special plan has been ordered to protect the electricity supply for the Civil Lines VIP area, which comprises the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister’s house, and the Raj Niwas.

Battery Energy Storage System (BESS): A strategy for placing a BESS in Civil Lines has been instructed. In the event that the main grid is disrupted, this backup system—which is comparable to one that was put in place in Kilokari, South Delhi, in May 2025—will guarantee a steady supply of electricity.
