Delhi to host Chhath Puja on Yamuna with 100 temporary ghats and pollution control measures, honoring BJP’s election promise.

The Delhi administration is currently getting ready for Chhath Puja, which was once a contentious political event, on the banks of the Yamuna after Durga Puja and Dussehra. As the Water Board works to combat pollution, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the locations where the Irrigation Department is constructing 100 temporary ghats, or bathing steps.

The Delhi administration has begun preparing for the forthcoming Chhath Puja after the Durga Puja and Dussehra celebrations came to an end. This year’s celebration will be held on the banks of the Yamuna River, fulfilling a major election pledge made by the BJP to the Purvanchal community.

As part of the preparations, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is expected to visit the permanent ghats along the Yamuna on Saturday.

Development and Arrangements for Ghat

To guarantee sufficient facilities for devotees, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department is implementing a multifaceted strategy:

Temporary Ghats: 100 temporary ghats will be built at designated sites; preparations are now underway. If necessary, this figure can be raised.

Permanent Ghats: In a number of locations, tenders for the building of new permanent ghats have already been released.

Redevelopment: In order to get ready for the celebration, the existing old ghats will also be renovated.

Addressing Pollution in Yamuna

The high pollution levels and the development of toxic foam in the Yamuna, particularly in the vicinity of Kalindi Kunj, are a major annual concern. Although pollution levels are currently lower due to this year’s considerable rainfall, the Delhi Jal Board is actively managing the problem.

Toxic chemicals will not be employed to suppress the foam, officials have assured. Other approaches will be used to solve the issue instead, such as:

– Sprinklers have been installed at the Okhla Barrage.

– The deployment of boats that have movable sprinklers installed.

– Separating the foam from the water requires the use of specialized equipment.

The decision to allow Chhath Puja on the Yamuna’s banks overturns a prior prohibition that had generated political discussion in the capital.
