The national capital witnessed severe weather conditions on Tuesday afternoon as a powerful Delhi Dust Storm Alert was issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A dust storm swept across multiple parts of the city, bringing strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning, and brief rainfall.
Under the Delhi Dust Storm Alert, wind speeds reached up to 92 kmph in areas like Palam and Dwarka, causing temporary disruption across the city. The IMD had earlier upgraded the warning to a red alert for Delhi.
IMD Warns of Strong Winds, Rain, and Lightning
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the Delhi Dust Storm Alert included forecasts of thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds ranging between 50–60 kmph, with higher gusts in isolated areas.
The alert remained active until 5 pm, with weather conditions intensifying during the afternoon. Officials confirmed that the Delhi Dust Storm Alert was triggered due to an active western disturbance impacting North-West India.
NCR Regions Also Affected by Severe Weather
The impact of the Delhi Dust Storm Alert was not limited to the capital alone. Nearby NCR regions such as Sonipat, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, and Hisar also experienced dust storms followed by thunderstorms and light rain.

The weather system caused temporary visibility issues and fluctuating wind patterns across several districts under the Delhi Dust Storm Alert zone.
Meteorological Explanation and Forecast
IMD scientist Naresh Kumar explained that a western disturbance over North Pakistan has triggered unstable weather conditions across North-West India. He confirmed that the Delhi Dust Storm Alert may continue with intermittent rainfall and gusty winds in the coming days.
He also indicated that another western disturbance is expected around the 18th, which could bring further rainfall, while light showers are likely in Delhi on the 20th and 21st.
Air Quality and Temperature Conditions
Despite the storm activity, Delhi’s Air Quality Index remained in the moderate category at 135. Temperatures hovered between 38°C and 40°C before the storm intensified under the Delhi Dust Storm Alert conditions.
