Punjab Government Aims to Keep Cultural Heritage Alive Through Sports

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has reiterated his government’s strong commitment to promoting and preserving the traditional rural games of the state, which form an integral part of Punjab’s rich cultural identity.

Addressing a gathering during a sports-related event, the Chief Minister emphasized that rural sports are not just physical activities, but are deeply rooted in the heritage, values, and lifestyle of the Punjabi people. He said that traditional games such as kabaddi, wrestling, tug-of-war, bullock cart racing, and gulli danda reflect the community spirit and strength of rural Punjab and must be passed on to future generations.

  • “Rural games are our pride. They not only keep our youth fit but also connect them to our soil, our values, and our glorious traditions,” said CM Mann.

Preserving Heritage While Engaging Youth

CM Mann emphasized how sports can engage youth and divert them from the path of drug abuse and other vices, stating that promotion of rural games is part of an overall youth empowerment scheme of the government. “Sports instill discipline, teamwork, and dedication—values that our youth must embrace,” he further stated.

In an age of digital entertainment and shifting urban lifestyles, the government wants to ensure that these traditional games do not fade into history by involving sports federations, local panchayats, and cultural organizations in this initiative.

Looking Ahead

In fact, when it comes to world-class athletes emerging from the traditional games, Punjab never shies away from that. The Chief Minister’s announcement surely reaffirms the state’s commitment to protecting its legacy while fostering new talent.

The response has been enthusiastic from sportspersons, cultural groups, and rural communities as everyone considers it a step forward for the cultural rejuvenation of Punjab through sports.
