Major boost for Bihar’s railway network
In a significant development for Bihar’s transport infrastructure, the Ministry of Railways has approved the Final Location Survey (FLS) for 12 new projects under the East Central Railway (ECR). The surveys, costing more than ₹10.51 crore, aim to improve regional connectivity, reduce congestion at key junctions, and support economic growth in the state.
Saraswati Chandra, Chief Public Relations Officer of ECR, shared the details on Wednesday. He explained that the FLS is the last and most crucial stage before any major construction work begins. It involves detailed mapping and feasibility analysis after the selection of a specific route.
Key projects approved for survey
One of the most notable projects under this initiative is the proposed 23-kilometer Jubba Sahni Bypass near Muzaffarpur. This bypass aims to reduce heavy traffic pressure at the busy Muzaffarpur Junction. The survey for this project will cost ₹69 lakh.
Additionally, three major doubling projects have been cleared for surveys. These include:
- Sakri–Forbesganj line (129 km) – Survey cost ₹3.09 crore
- Samastipur–Hasanpur–Khagaria line (85 km) – Survey cost ₹2.37 crore
- Ara–Sasaram line (97 km) – Survey cost ₹2.32 crore
According to officials, these projects will help improve train frequency, reduce delays, and enhance overall passenger and freight movement across Bihar.
New railway lines to boost regional links
Apart from doubling works, surveys for new lines have also been sanctioned. A 22-kilometer Lalitgram–Birpur line, located near the Nepal border, has been approved at a cost of ₹66 lakh. This project is expected to strengthen Indo-Nepal connectivity while boosting trade and travel opportunities for border communities.
Another important proposal is the 10-kilometer Fatuha–Bidupur line, which includes a new bridge across the Ganga River. The survey cost for this line is estimated at ₹30 lakh. Once executed, the line is likely to reduce travel time between Patna and nearby districts, providing a faster link for both commuters and freight transport.
Other approved projects
The ministry has also cleared surveys for additional projects aimed at easing congestion and improving urban connectivity. These include:
- A rail flyover near Fatuha to streamline traffic movement
- New bypasses at Pandit DeenDayal Upadhyay, Neura, and Daniyawan
- Proposed lines connecting Patliputra to Phulwari Sharif and Danapur
Railway officials stated that these projects are designed to cater to Bihar’s rising demand for better rail services, given the increasing passenger load and freight requirements in the state.
Economic and social impact
Experts believe that once implemented, these railway projects will provide a major boost to Bihar’s economy. Improved rail connectivity is expected to reduce travel time, enhance safety, and promote smoother freight operations. Additionally, areas near the new lines could witness increased business activity and job opportunities.
The move comes at a crucial time as the state prepares for upcoming elections. Railway infrastructure has often been a central demand in Bihar, with political leaders promising stronger connectivity to fuel development.
Looking ahead
With the approval of Final Location Surveys, the projects have moved a step closer to execution. After the surveys are completed, the ministry will finalize detailed project reports before construction begins. Although timelines have not yet been announced, officials assured that the process will be expedited.
For Bihar’s residents, the projects represent more than just new tracks—they symbolize enhanced mobility, stronger trade links, and an improved standard of living.
