Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal Inaugurate Modern Sewerage Treatment Plant in Mohali
Mohali, Punjab – July 7, 2025: In a major boost to Punjab’s urban infrastructure and environmental efforts, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Delhi CM & AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal jointly inaugurated a state-of-the-art Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) in Mohali. The newly established facility is set to play a crucial role in improving waste water management, reducing pollution, and enhancing the overall quality of life in the region.
An Important Phase in the Development of Urban Infrastructure
The inauguration is a major step forward in the Punjab government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), continuing its commitment to building smart and sustainable cities. In order to guarantee effective and environmentally responsible processing of sewage water produced from residential and commercial sources in the Mohali region, the new STP was created utilizing cutting-edge technology.
According to officials, the plant will serve thousands of people in various Mohali sectors and has a high treatment capacity, which will lessen the strain on open drains and antiquated treatment units.
CM Bhagwant Mann: ‘This Is Not Just a Plant, It’s a Promise’
Addressing the gathering at the inauguration, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described the project as a “transformational step” for Mohali and other urban centers in Punjab.
“This plant is not just about sewage—it is a statement of our commitment to clean living, healthy citizens, and a green Punjab. Proper waste management is essential for a civilized society, and our government will not compromise on basic amenities,” he said.
He also thanked the people of Mohali for their support and assured that similar projects are in the pipeline across other cities in Punjab.
Arvind Kejriwal: ‘Basic Services Are Our First Priority’
Delhi CM and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal praised the Punjab government for executing civic development works. Clean drinking water, sanitation, and a pollution-free environment are, according to him, the most basic rights of every citizen.
“In every state where the AAP is in power, we give priority first to the big basic services, namely, water, electricity, schools, and hospitals. This sewerage plant stands as a symbol of that very philosophy. It stands for that kind of governance which we stand for-clean, transparent, and people-oriented,” said Kejriwal.
He said the clean government is not only about fighting corruption but about doing something that benefits people’s day-to-day life.
How the New STP Will Help Mohali
According to officials, the Mohali sewerage treatment plant is designed with modern filtration, sedimentation, and chemical treatment technologies. The processed water will either be safely discharged into natural water bodies or reused for non-potable purposes such as gardening, construction, and street cleaning—significantly reducing water wastage.
Benefits of the Plant:
- Efficient management of sewage from high-density urban areas
- Reduction of untreated wastewater entering natural water bodies
- Lower risk of waterborne diseases and health hazards
- Reuse of treated water for secondary purposes
- Contribution to Swachh Bharat and Jal Shakti missions
That will be broader: Cleaner Cities, Healthier Communities
The opening of the plant is part of Punjab’s long-term urban sanitation plan, which includes upgrading drainage facilities, developing green belts, and keeping an eye on water quality on a regular basis. Officials also hinted that more waste-to-energy plants and composting units may come up in the future to ensure public welfare side by side with environmental protection.
Public Engagement and Transparency
Local residents and officials present at the inauguration appreciated the government’s transparency and pace of execution. A live demonstration of the plant’s process was also shown, helping people understand how their waste is being handled responsibly.
This development is yet another example of how Punjab, under the AAP leadership, is focusing on action over announcements and taking measurable steps toward becoming a model state for urban development and sustainability.
