The formation of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government in Tamil Nadu under Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has marked a major political shift in the state, with the Congress TVK Alliance playing a crucial role in helping the party come to power.

Following a fractured verdict in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Congress extended support to TVK, enabling Vijay to comfortably cross the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly. As part of the political understanding, TVK is reportedly expected to allocate two cabinet berths to Congress ministers.

The new government took oath during a grand ceremony held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, where Vijay was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. R. N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay along with nine ministers.

Congress TVK Alliance Becomes Key To Government Formation

The Congress TVK Alliance emerged after TVK fell short of the majority mark despite becoming the single largest party in the Assembly elections.

Contesting its first-ever Assembly election under Vijay’s leadership, TVK secured 108 seats but missed the required majority figure of 118 seats. The result forced the party to seek support from Congress and other like-minded allies.

Congress had contested 28 seats as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) but managed to win only five seats. Despite the limited numbers, the Congress leadership decided to back TVK after several rounds of discussions held by the All India Congress Committee leadership in New Delhi.

The Congress TVK Alliance also received support from CPI, CPI(M), IUML and VCK, helping the coalition comfortably establish its majority in the Assembly.

Congress Likely To Get Two Cabinet Posts

The Congress TVK Alliance is being viewed as a politically significant development because Congress is expected to become part of the Tamil Nadu cabinet after several decades.

Despite being a long-time ally of the DMK in previous governments, Congress had remained outside the state ministry for years. Even in 2006, when the DMK formed the government with outside support from Congress and PMK, the party was not given cabinet representation despite winning 34 seats.

AICC national observer for Tamil Nadu Girish Chodankar confirmed that discussions regarding Congress nominees for ministerial positions are still underway. He said the party leadership in Delhi will take the final decision regarding cabinet representation.

According to party sources, Melur MLA P Viswanathan and Killiyoor MLA S. Rajesh Kumar are among the frontrunners for ministerial berths in the new government.

The Congress TVK Alliance is expected to play an important role in shaping Tamil Nadu’s political landscape in the coming years as Vijay begins his tenure as Chief Minister.
