ITANAGAR — Indian martial arts reached a new milestone on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, as two athletes from Arunachal Pradesh dominated the global stage. Nyeman Wangsu and Mercy Ngaimong delivered a stellar performance at the Moscow Wushu Star International Championship. The five-day tournament, which concluded in the Russian capital, saw the duo secure a combined total of five silver medals. This achievement has ignited celebrations across Northeast India, showcasing the region’s growing dominance in combat sports. Both athletes are three-time National Games gold medallists and trainees of the Sports Authority of Arunachal (SAA).

Nyeman Wangsu, a seasoned competitor, led the medal haul by clinching three silver medals. She showcased exceptional skill in the changquan, daoshu, and gunshu categories. Her precision and agility earned high praise from international judges. Meanwhile, Mercy Ngaimong added two more silver medals to India’s tally in the jianshu and qiangshu events. Their coach, Maibam Premchandra of the Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy (SLSA), attributed the success to months of intensive training. Consequently, their victory has significantly improved India’s standing in the international wushu rankings ahead of the continental season.

Asian Games 2026: The Road to Japan via Moscow

The success at the Moscow Wushu Star International Championship serves as a vital warm-up for the upcoming 20th Asian Games. Scheduled to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, later this year, the Asian Games represent the ultimate target for both athletes. Both Wangsu and Ngaimong have already cleared the preliminary selection trials. According to the All Arunachal Pradesh Wushu Association (AAPWA), the final selection camp is slated for June 2026. This trial will determine the official Indian squad that will travel to Japan in September.

For Wangsu and Ngaimong, the 2026 Games offer a chance for redemption. In 2023, the duo missed the Hangzhou Asian Games due to administrative hurdles and visa issues. However, their current form suggests they are ready to turn that past disappointment into a podium finish in Japan. Additionally, their consistent excellence in international arenas has made them the frontrunners for the Indian contingent. Transitioning from national stars to international icons, these athletes are now being viewed as India’s brightest prospects for future Olympic consideration, should wushu be fully inducted.

Infrastructure Gaps: AAPWA Urges Chief Minister’s Intervention

Despite the international glory, the state of wushu infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh remains a major concern. AAPWA General Secretary John Tara Bakey utilized the victory celebration to highlight the challenges faced by local athletes. He pointed out that there is still no dedicated indoor wushu training hall in the entire capital region. Currently, athletes must manage with constrained facilities that do not meet international standards. Moreover, the lack of a High-

Performance Centre (HPC) hinders the scientific training required for events like the Olympics.

Bakey earnestly exhorted authorities, particularly Chief Minister Pema Khandu, to prioritize sports infrastructure. He argued that while the athletes have shown “unwavering determination,” the state must provide a well-equipped environment to sharpen their skills. Furthermore, the AAPWA has requested specialized mats and electronic scoring systems to simulate international competition conditions. If the state establishes these centers now, experts believe Arunachal could produce a dozen more international medallists by 2028. For now, the athletes continue to train in makeshift setups, proving that their grit is as sharp as their blades.

The Growing Popularity of Wushu in Northeast India

The impact of this victory extends beyond the medal count. Wushu has seen a 40% rise in enrollment across local academies in Itanagar and Pasighat. As parents see stars like Nyeman Wangsu achieve global success, more children are being encouraged to take up martial arts. This “Wangsu-Ngaimong Effect” is expected to boost the sport’s popularity locally. Ultimately, the story of these two women is a testament to the talent brewing in the Himalayan foothills. As the final trials in June approach, the entire nation will be watching to see if these “Wushu Queens” can finally claim gold on the Asian stage.
